So You Want to Go to a Liberal Arts College?

Sep 30, 2013 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

All through high school, I knew that UC was probably the school I would be attending after I graduated. With that in mind, I knew why UC was amazing. The campus was pretty, the people were nice, and it was a Christian, liberal arts college. I would consider myself lucky that my sister went to UC before I called the college my home, but you may not be as lucky as I was.

What To Do In This Tiny Town!

You're here! You've settled in by now, you know your classes, but you may not be familiar with the area. I’m not going to be some kind of recreation representative and say: “There’s plenty to do in Williamsburg! You can work on a farm, plant a garden, visit Wal-Mart, or go hiking!” Because let’s be honest - it appears that is all there is to do around here. Hiking, gardening, and farming are not everyone's specialty or their list of hobbies. Visiting Wal-Mart?

Synchronizing Your Sleep Schedule

Go from waking up like this...  (See end for final result)
1. Don't eat or drink sugary or caffeinated things after 5 p.m.
You have to let the caffeine mad sugar process through your body, otherwise you'll be too hyped up to fall asleep.

Conquering the Internal Struggle Known as Homesickness

Picture it: nearly one month ago I moved into my new home in Mahan Hall. I only knew a few people from high school and the Governor’s Scholar’s Program at UC, and the rush of emotion moving into college was strong. I was scared; I was excited; I was nervous. Moving in my sister four years ago, I knew the emotional roller coaster my parents were on as I moved in. As they left, my family was crying, and I suddenly felt alone. I was homesick.

Tony Nolan Convocation

I said in my previous blog that I was going to keep you updated on UC COLLEGE TERMS. Here's term #3: CONVOCATION, more informally known as convo. For your first 3 years at UC you are required to pass this "convocation." This is not some strange, cult-like ritual (even though that's what the name kind of sounds like to me). Each semester you have to go to 8 extra events. There are 4 categories - major, academic/cultural, general interest, and faith development - and you have to go to 2 events for each category.

The Stress of Leaving Home

Sep 16, 2013 - Comments: 0

Live in a dorm. Seriously. I can’t overstress how much I have grown in my short time staying on campus. This is what growing up is like. It’s not perfect by any means, and I’m glad it’s not perfect. It is the imperfections that force you to adapt, change, and better yourself. It’s not easy though, and one of the hardest things that can happen to a new college student is coping with pressures that you’ve never encountered. These are things like the fading of friendships due to insurmountable distance and the inevitable homesickness. So how do we cope?

Tips and Tricks to Help With Your Time!

Between classes, sports, and activities there is always something to do here at UC. Whether its getting out of class to go eat lunch or rushing to get ready for practice or a club meeting. If you are not into sports you have so many other options to get involved. You can run for house council or even join the mountain outreach program. Whatever your interests UC has it! The important thing is to manage your time, especially freshman year because the last thing you want to do is overwhelm yourself with things you can not handle.

Perks and Predicaments Posed By Participation

Sep 09, 2013 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

One of the first things you will notice when you step on UC's campus is that almost every person you see appears to plays a sport. I, for example, was recruited to UC to play softball. As was my roommate, my sister, and a good portion of people living in my dorm. Being part of a team has it's perks, but also it's fair share of problems.

Creating My UC Community

Before I started college, my sister always told me that being active on campus is essential; that if I fully want to enjoy my freshman year, find some activity or club to be a member of. I really didn’t understand why that was important as an incoming freshman. I was always active in student government clubs, FCA, and community-oriented clubs like the Student YMCA and National Honors Society so it wasn’t too hard to immerse myself in the activities of Welcome Week.
